    Detective Thomas Sampson Archive: Arrested Mrs. Surratt and Lewis Paine. Small archive of material related to the distinguished career of Thomas Sampson, the "Wall Street Detective" who arrested Mrs. Surratt, members of her household, and Lewis Paine, who awkwardly stumbled on the scene. The group includes: an envelope inscribed by Sampson "Thos. Sampson Naturalization Papers" together with the naturalization form dated October 23, 1851, an 1874 New York Superintendent of Police form listing resolutions of honorable mention for various officers citing Sampson for his work clearing up the mystery of the Sing Sing escapes, an 1886 fraternal lodge dues receipt, an 1890 itemized pawn shop receipt for medals and a watch pledged as security, an 1889 letter regarding the payment of interest on the medals and watch, an 1862 teacher's letter to Mrs. Sampson regarding the absence of her daughter from school, an 1882 letter from J. Whitehead & Son in Sampson's home town of Appleby, England regarding a framing job for two medals, manuscript notes for his funeral service and assorted newspaper clippings recounting his career.
