    Description

Confederate States: Patriotic Parade Flag. Outstanding silk parade flag, no doubt enthusiastically waved by a Southern belle, in the Second National pattern ("The Stainless Banner") adopted May 1, 1863. The canton is in the "Southern Cross" pattern, typically associated with the CSA. There are thirteen stars which represent the eleven states of the Confederacy, along with border states Kentucky and Missouri who were never able to make the transition. The field is pure white. It measures 7" x 3.5" and is attached to a wooden pole 10" long, entwined with blue & white silk ribbons... a most unusual and distinctive feature. There is some scattered foxing in the field plus two vertical pulls along the right edge, of little consequence. The flag has made a circuitous route since 1863. The consignor lives in France. One of his ancestors was a French naval officer who served on the frigate "La Guerriere". Because of the situation in Mexico with the Emperor Maximilian I (called the "Mexican Campaign of 1862-1867" in France), the French navy kept a strong presence along the Eastern seaboard and Caribbean during the war years. The consignor's ancestor arrived in the French West Indies on January 2, 1862, served on several ships, visited distant ports and returned home on January 15, 1864. He stopped at many North American harbors and obtained souvenirs which he brought back to France. This rebel flag was one of them. It now makes the return trip back to the U.S. after a sojourn of 153 years.
