Coach Maker's Crest Pattern Ledger. Produced by British coach maker Thrupp & Maberly, this wonderful quarto, manuscript book contains over 200 pages of beautiful, hand-drawn monograms and coats of arms spanning the years 1889 through 1903. The designs were used on the coaches of the upper classes, military officers, politicians, companies, and the nobility. Examples include the arms of the Duke of Westminster, Lord Battersea, the Sultan of Morocco, et al. Complete index located in the front. In 1858, carriage makers Joseph Thrupp and George Maberly merged and Thrupp & Maberly was born. By the 1880s, the company began to manufacture automobile bodies in addition to horse drawn carriages, so it is possible that the designs found in this book would be found on early cars. After the First World War, the company continued making coach-bodies for Bentley, Daimler, and Rolls Royce. The company continued until the last factory closed in 1967. Bound in brown leather with two brass clasps and brass corner protectors. Red leather label with company name in gilt on the front board. Very light soiling and toning to pages. A beautiful exemplar.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
