Civil War Regimental Newspaper: 2nd Colorado Cavalry's Soldier's Letter. Three pages, 8" x 9.75", May 2-7, 1865, Vol. 1, No. 23. Oliver V. Wallace, Editor and Proprietor. The masthead reads, "Soldier's Letter. Second Colorado Cavalry" and features a U.S. flag above the phrase, "The Flag We Fight Under." Below the masthead reads, "A Regimental Paper-To Accompany the Regiment."

Both Confederate and Union armies produced various regimental newspapers which provide important perspectives into the lives of Civil War soldiers. The Soldier's Letter was published longer than most regimental newspapers, from August 1864 until November 1865, and is unique because it was published from Fort Riley, Kansas, by soldiers from the Colorado Territory. The 2nd Colorado Cavalry organized in St. Louis in October 1863 and was commanded by Colonel James Ford, tasked with protecting the Kansas citizens from guerillas. It mustered out of service in September 1865.

This issue of the Soldier's Letter, published just two weeks after President Lincoln's assassination, contains an ode and article on his death. The paper also notes Jefferson Davis' capture and attempts by "negro troops" to "massacre of rebel citizens of Memphis." A very clean copy with minor stains around folds on page one. Page three of the four integral pages is blank.
