Civil War Handmade and Ornately Decorated Schoolgirl News Journal. 5" x 8" booklet bound with silk ribbons, titled "The Semi-Annual Olio", 18pp., hand-colored sketches on front and rear covers. The manuscript text starts off: "The Semiannual Olio Independent upon all subjects. Published when required. Terms reasonable in advance or double price if paid at the end of the year. Motto our Liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain. Published by Miss M. L. Brace, G. B. Mitchell..." Olio is defined as a miscellaneous collection of things or hodge-podge. This charming piece of Americana was likely published by northern schoolgirls. Some excerpts: "The Semiannual Olio is just the paper for Generals, Blacksmiths and the President as it would have told McLellan [sic] how to get more men to Richmond than what was taken prisoners... it would inform the president that there is a half a dozen of them everlasting negroes got lives down south and that he needs at least 250,000 more men to put things down..." Scattered stains, ribbons quite delicate, booklet itself sound and complete.
