    Description

Civil War Era Theater. Two Howard Athenaeum (Boston) Playbills 1862-1863. 1) 5" x 17.75" playbill for the June 28, 1862 "Positively Last Appearance" of Lucille Western as Camille in the "celebrated" French play "Camille or the Fate of a Coquette" at the Howard Athenaeum. The "new local Burlesque" entitled "Dog Show or the Great Showman Outwitted" shared the bill. The Playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F.F. Farwell. 2) 5 3/8" x 17.25" playbill for the May 2, 1863 appearance of the Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Florence in three plays, "The Irish Mormon," "Thrice Married," and "The Returned Volunteer" at the Howard Athenaeum. The playbill was printed in Boston by F.A. Searle.

Lucille Western (1843-1877) was an American actress who began her career acting with her sister Helen Western (1844-1868), one of John Wilkes Booth's girlfriends. By the 1860s, Lucille Western had become a successful actress.

The Howard Athenaeum was one of Boston's most famous theaters. Opened in 1845, it hosted many of America's leading actors, including John Wilkes Booth. By the 1860s, however, the theater was becoming overshadowed by the Boston Museum and the Boston Theatre. By the end of the 19th century, the Howard Athenaeum was offering only vaudeville and burlesque shows.
