    Civil War Era Theater. Two Boston Academy of Music Playbills, 1862. 1) 3.75" x 12" playbill for the January 23, 1862 performance of the "Grand Romantic Equestrian Melo Drama" of "The Cataract of the Ganges or, The Rajah's Daughter" at the Boston Academy of Music. Also on the bill was the "Wonderful Performing Elephants 'Antony and Cleopatra.'" The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F.F. Farwell. 2) 5" x 16.25" playbill for the September 23, 1862 performance Gabriel Ravel and Troupe in the pantomime "Nicodemus or, The Unlucky Fisherman" and the farce "La Maga" at the Boston Academy of Music. The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. Eastburn. Playbill #1 has shadows of glue residue at the top and bottom corners, without affecting text. Playbill #2 has several stains that may be glue residue with no effect on the text.

    Gabriel Ravel was a world renowned clown and pantomime artist. His troupe was considered on the best of its kind.

    The Boston Academy of Music, founded in 1833, was the first music school of its kind in the United States. It still exists.
