    Civil War Era Theater. Three Boston Playbills for Musical Performances, 1862-1865. 1) 4.75" x 13" playbill for the December 6, 1862 performance of the Mendelssohn Quintette Club and Orpheus Musical Society at the Melodeon in Boston. The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F.F. Farwell. 2) 4.75" x 13.25" playbill for the May 25, 1864 performance by Carl Zerrahn and the Boston Orchestral Union at the Boston Music Hall. The Playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F.F. Farwell. 3) 6.25" x 11.75" playbill for the May 26, [1865] concert of Boston's Handel and Haydn Society performing the works of Beethoven, Rossini, Donizetti, Liszt, and others. The playbill was printed in Boston by E.L. Balch. The playbills have shadows of glue residue on the top and bottom corners without affecting text
    Carl Zerrahn (1826-1909) was a German-born American flautist and conductor. Popular in New England and particularly in Boston, he was known for his conducting choral works. The Handel and Haydn Society is a chorus and period instrument orchestra that was founded in Boston in 1815.

    The Melodeon was a Boston concert hall that opened in 1839. It hosted a variety of events, including lectures and popular entertainments until it closed in 1870. The Boston Music Hall, opened in Boston in 1852, was the original home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The building closed in 1900 and converted into a vaudeville hall named the Orpheum Theatre.
