    Civil War Era Theater. Playbill for Patriotic Concert at Boston Music Hall, 1861. 4 3/8" x 12 1/8" playbill for the October 26, 1862 farewell concert "given as a parting compliment" to Mr. P.S. Gilmore, "Band Master of the Corps" at the Boston Music Hall. The show was billed as "An Evening in Camp of the 24th Regiment, N.E.G." The concert included "Full Regimental Band! And Drum Corps!!!...assisted by a "Monster Chorus of Soldiers." It was announced that during the concert "the American Flag will be unfurled by Daniel Webster, Jr., grandson of the 'Defender of the Constitution.'" The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F. F. Farwell. The playbill has shadow of glue residue at the top and bottom corners without affecting text.

    The 24th Regiment, New England Guards was recruited at Camp Massasoit, Readville, Massachusetts, in September 1861. The regiment was still in the Readville area by the time of this October concert. The regiment was mustered out of service in Richmond on January 10, 1866. Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1892), an Irish-born musician who performed in the Boston area before the Civil War. A noted cornet player, he became leader of several brass bands. When the Civil War broke out, Gilmore was the leader of Boston Brigade Band, also known as the Gilmore Band. Gilmore and his 68-member band enlisted in the Union Army and became the band of the 24th Regiment. During the Civil War, Gilmore wrote the lyrics to the popular song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," published under the name of Louis Lambert.
