    Civil War Era Theater. Eight Boston Museum Playbills, 1863-1865. 1) 4.75" x 13.25" playbill for the March 9-10, [1863] appearance of William Warren in the comedies "Mrs. Walthrop's Boarders" and "Make Your Wills" at the Boston Museum. 2) 4.5" x 13.25" playbill for the March 27, 1863 the "Last Benefit" appearance of Mrs. Barrow in the lead role in "Victorine or, I'll Sleep on It" and as Pauline in "Delicate Ground" at the Boston Museum. 3) 4.5" x 13.5" playbill for the April 3, 1863 "Annual Benefit" of Mr. J. H. Ring and the appearance of Josephine Orton in "The Mysterious Stranger," "Le Guardian de la Porte," and "Aunt Charlotte's Maid" at the Boston Museum. 4) 4.5" x 13" playbill for the May 16, 1863 appearance of Mary Provost as the Countess in "Love' at the Boston Museum. 5) 4.5" x 14.25" playbill for the January 23, 1865 performance of the "The Veteran" at the Boston Museum. 6) 4.75" x 14.5" playbill for the August 23, 1865 performance by the Boston Museum stock company of "The Lady of Lyons." Along with William Warren in "Nursey Chickweed." 7) 4.75" x 15.75" playbill for the August 25, 1865 Boston Museum stock company performance of "Ingomar" and William Warren in "Somebody Else." 8) 5 1/8" x 14.25" playbill for the February 12, 1866 Boston Museum stock company performance of "Sons of the Cape." The eight playbills were printed in Boston by F.A. Searle. The playbills have shadows of glue residue at the top and bottom corners which does not affect text. Playbill #5 is torn at the top and has been repaired by tape on the reverse side, with no effect on the text.

    William Warren (1812-1888) was a Philadelphia-born actor known for his comedic roles. He became a member of the Boston Museum in 1847 and acted there continuously until his retirement in 1883. Mrs. Julia Bennett Barrow (1824-1903) was an English actress and manager. J.H. Ring was one of the leading stock actors with the Boston Museum company. Josephine Orton (1840-1926) was one of the leading actresses with the Boston Museum company. Mary Provost (1835-1914) was an actress during the ante-bellum and Civil War era.

    The Boston Museum opened in 1841 and hosted a wax museum, a natural history museum, and an art museum in addition to theatrical performances. Numerous famous actors and actresses entertained audiences at the Boston Museum, including Edwin and John Wilkes Booth, William Warren, and Kate Reignolds.
