    Description

    Circular Announcing the Release of Antonio López de Santa Anna from Captivity. One page with integral blank, 8.5 x 11", in Spanish, Ciudad Victoria [Mexico], January 23, 1837. In part: "The Ministry of Affairs has received official communication confirming the freedom of General-President Antonio López de Santa Anna." Following the defeat of his army at the Battle of San Jacinto, Gen. Santa Anna was found hiding in a marsh dressed in the uniform of a dragoon. He was forced to sign the Treaties of Velasco. He remained a prisoner in Texas and in the United States until his meeting with U.S. President Andrew Jackson in 1837. He retired to his estate in Veracruz, but only for a time. Signed in print by José Antonio Fernandez with his holographic rubric. Heavily toned and waterstained. Binding holes along the left edge.
