Certificate of Stock in the Town of Swartwout. One page, 8" x 4.5". Houston: Telegraph Press [1838]. First printing. Signed by James Morgan, an early Texas merchant and land speculator. Printed stock certificate completed in manuscript: "This is to Certify, That George Hammeken is the holder of One Share of Stock in the Town of Swartwout . . . which is situated on Trinity River, Texas." George Hammeken, who came to Texas in 1833 on the advice of Stephen F. Austin, is most noted as being the translator of Vicente Filisola's Evacuation of Texas in 1837. According to Streeter, "That the town was promoted in the fall of 1838 is shown by an interesting and quite extensive advertisement for the sale of 'shares or lots' in the town published in the Telegraph and Texas Register." Age toning, with heavier browning at right margin; otherwise near fine.

    Reference: Streeter 244.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
