    Description

Cattle Raisers Association Brand Ledgers for the Year 1916. These two 4.25" x 7" books, bound in maroon leather, represent parts one and two of the "#7 . . . Series 1916" kept by the Cattle Raisers Association in Fort Worth, Texas. Organized alphabetically by brand (with a series of symbols following in volume II), each set of facing pages contains information such as the ear marks used by each ranch, their brand, the name of the owner, the ranch's location by county (in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico), and the post office local to each operation. Supplemental information has been added in red ink. While the boards exhibit moderate wear with evidence of waterstaining on the endpapers, the pages are in near fine condition.

Many famous ranch brands are found within including the JA Ranch, founded in 1879 by Charles Goodnight and John G. Adair. At the time of this series' creation, John Adair was dead and his widow, Cornelia Adair, is listed as the owner. Also seen is Waggoner Ranch. Founded near Vernon, Texas, in 1849, the Waggoner Ranch is the largest contiguous ranch in the United States and only second in size to the King Ranch.

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association was established in Graham, Texas, in 1877 as the Stock-Raisers' Association of North-West Texas. In an effort to expand, the group changed its name to Cattle Raisers Association of Texas in 1893. In 1921, the group merged with Charles Goodnight's Panhandle and Southwestern Stockmen's Association and adopted its current moniker. Today, there are over 15,000 member ranches.
