Description
Tombstone, Arizona: Organizing the Second Fire Company in Tombstone. Revised Constitution, By-Laws and Order of Business of the Rescue Hose Co., No. 1. of Tombstone (Tombstone: Epitaph Book and Job Printing Office, 1889), 27 page pamphlet, 4.5" x 5 38." The pamphlet offers a fascinating insight concerning the operation of an early fire company as well as the names and various duties of its officers, rules of conduct for members at a fire, and the required dress of members of the company. For example, members of the Rescue Hose Company wore red hats with a red colored shield and with a white border, with the word "Rescue" in a semi-circle on the shield with number "1" underneath. The Rescue Hose Company, No. 1, organized on June 26, 1881, in the wake of the town's first great fire, and was Tombstone's second fire company. The first was the Tombstone Engine Company, No. 1, which was founded in September 1880. Fires were a constant threat to cities in towns, such as Tombstone, with buildings that were predominately wooden structures. It was not unusual for cities and towns like Tombstone to have more than one fire company. The pamphlet, in its original wrappers, has a few minor stains on the front and back covers and two small pin holes on the back cover. The text is in excellent condition.Auction Info
