Description

Sitting Bull: An Important Performance Broadside preceding his Association with Buffalo Bill's Wild West. In 1884, Sitting Bull and a group of Sioux were recruited to travel a circuit of cities. Sitting Bull would orate in his native language, which would be interpreted by Louis Primeau. Primeau would relay his words to Major Newsom, who was the formal lecturer. Sitting Bull was very disappointed with the undertaking, vowing never to be involved in such a venture again. It seems that Newsom largely disregarded what Sitting Bull actually said, so that an attempt to win sympathy for the plight of his people became a vivid description of the carnage of Little Bighorn - which was of course what his audience had come to hear.

We have not previously encountered this early broadside. It is in very good condition, with one small hole in the center not affecting any lettering. Several minor edge tears and corner creases detract minimally. It measures 8.5 x 14". Attached at top of verso to album page.
