DescriptionRio Grande and Texas Land Company Unengrossed Certificate of Right to Locate. Single sheet, 9.75" x 14.75". New York, August 21, 1834. An engraved form entitling the recipient "to locate upon & hold in severalty One Thousand Acres of land not previously located within the limits of two certain tracts of land commonly known as Beale's River Grant and the Woodbury Grant, as granted by the Government of the State of Coahuila and Texas to John Charles Beales and James Grant, Esquires on the ninth day of October 1832..."
The certificate is signed by Charles Edwards as Secretary; John Charles Beales as "Empresario and also as attorney for the other Empresario James Grant"; and Isaac Johnson and Silas Stilwell as Trustees. An untitled map showing the location of the grant appears in the lower left corner.
Listed in Streeter as 1152A. Streeter writes: "Another issue with the number of acres at head changed to read, 1000, but otherwise almost the same, with the same date, map, etc. and apparently from the same plate." He lists a single copy located at Yale University.
Condition: Uneven margin along left, with horizontal folds and spots of heavy toning along right edge.
