Description

Revolutionary War Broadsheet: "An Act for the Better Forming, Regulating, and Conducting the Military Force of this State." Printed on the recto and verso of one sheet, 10.5" x 14.75", "State of Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations," October 1779, signed in print by William Mumford as deputy secretary and printed by John Carter.

This act, approved by the Rhode Island General Assembly during the October 1779 session, was passed "Whereas the security and defence of all free States essentially depend, under God, upon the exertions of a well-regulated militia: And whereas the present situation of this State demands our most serious attention to those important objects . . . : Wherefore, for the better forming, regulating and conducting the military force of this State, Be it Enacted by this General Assembly, and by the authority thereof it is hereby Enacted, That all effective males between the ages of sixteen and fifty, except such as are hereafter excepted, shall constitute and make the military force of this state. . . ."

Rhode Island was an early adaptor of independence from Great Britain, but the state suffered when the British occupied Newport from 1777 through 1778. Following an unsuccessful attempt by rebels to expel the British at the Battle of Rhode Island in August 1778, the Rhode Island General Assembly went on the offensive by passing this act reorganizing "the military Force of this State." This sheet is darkly toned with minor foxing. No folds, though minor tears and a very few chips exists along the edges.
