Description

Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation Broadside signed in print by Abraham Lincoln and William H. Seward. 6" x 8", n.p., n.d. This is listed in Charles Eberstadt's Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation as no. 6 (pp. 12-13). Eberstadt describes it as a privately issued broadside, likely issued by J. M. Forbes from Boston in December 1862. Age-toned with minor foxing with a few faint creases. Two pin holes in the left margin; minor nicks to the lower edge.

Lincoln issued this "Proclamation," now known as the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, on September 22, 1862, stating that "on the 1st day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State, or any designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward and forever free." None of the Confederate states ended their rebellions so Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, just as he said. This broadside contains a quote on slavery in the lower margin by Alexander Stephens, "Vice President of the Cotton Confederacy."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
