Printed nine months before South Carolinians fired on Fort Sumter, this invitation reads in part: "The City Guard will visit Fort Hamilton on Wednesday, the 18th inst., for the purpose of target firing with the Sea Coast Guns. As this experiment is made as a test of the availability of our citizen soldiery for harbor defence, you are respectfully invited to be present." On the verso is written in period ink, "1860 M. Lovell, Capt. July 14."
