LeRoy Eldridge Cleaver Oversized FBI Wanted Poster.
    22.25" x 34.5"
    Washington, D.C.; Circa 1968

A wanted poster commercially issued reproducing the FBI Wanted Poster for the arrest of Cleaver. According to the poster, Cleaver is accused of "Interstate Flight - Assault with Intent to Commit Murder". His various aliases are listed, along with a physical description and the warning that he "allegedly has engaged police officers in gun battle in the past. Consider armed and extremely dangerous." With mugshots taken from 1966 and 1968. We could not identify the printer/publisher for the poster, but its existence speaks to the icon status Cleaver had assumed.

Eldridge Cleaver (1935-1998) was a writer, political activist, and later Minister of Information of the Black Panther Party. In 1968, he was also a presidential candidate, running on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Cleaver led a group of Black Panthers in an ambush on Oakland police officers. A shootout ensued, in which two officers and Cleaver were wounded and a 17-year-old Black Panther member was killed. Cleaver was subsequently charged with attempted murder and fled to Cuba.

Condition: Light area of soiling along the right side. Minor wear to the corners, with a small tear at the upper right corner. Else, good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
