DescriptionKansas Pacific Railway Broadside Advertising "The Great Central Plains!", 1877. A 4.5" x 21" printed description of the country "of which Ellsworth County is the radiating point", by Major W. Inman. A glowing description of the geography, agriculture, climate, and beauty of this central portion of Kansas written to entice settlers to the area. Issued by S. J. Gilmore, Land Commissioner, Kansas Pacific Railway, in Salina. Toned, folds, overall fine.
Originally designed to be a second, southern branch of the transcontinental railroad, alongside the Union Pacific, the Kansas Pacific eventually ran from Kansas City to Denver. A congressional act authorized large land grants to homesteaders who would populate the lands along the line, forming new towns and providing economic activity. This broadside was part of a campaign to lure these settlers to the area.
