DescriptionJose Maria de Ortega Printed Decree with Heading: "El Gobernador Y Comandante General del Departamento de Nuevo Leon, à
sus habitantes." (The Governor and Commander General of the State of Nuevo Leon, to its inhabitats.) One page folio broadside, 8.5" x 12.5", Monterey, November 21, 1844.
Signed in type by Ortega as governor and military commander. On the same day this broadside was issued, Ortega issued a second decree aimed specifically at the military, expressing the same call to honor in uniting for the means of reclaiming Texas. Ironically, elsewhere in Mexico, other orders were issued suspending all military activity against Texas for lack of funds. Not recorded in Streeter.
Condition: Untrimmed, with light dampstaining at bottom and stray foxing, otherwise very good.
"Fellow citizens: when the finishing touches are being put on the political edifice, which the illustrious spirit of the country lifted above the ruins which transformed the Nation, by parties, there appear some who are fueling the fratricidal flames in order to further desolate this unfortunate country, and to destroy this building in which the nation has vested its future and which is indisputably the legitimate expression of the sovereign will.
Such are the aims of the revolution that has sounded in Guadalajara and in spite of how its followers attempt to redress it with appearances of justice, no movement of that nature can have it, when it begins to throw down the political institutions appealing to arms as today it is intended, while the nation cries out to recuperate the territory of Texas, and which the Government of North America threatens us; well this equates the protest that was just made against the campaign that would avenge the spotted honor of Mexico..."
