Jose Maria de Ortega Printed Decree with Heading: "El Gobernador Y Comandante General del Departamento de Nuevo Leon, a la guarnicion de esta Capital." (The Governor and Commander General of the State of Nuevo Leon, to the garrison of this Capital.) One page folio broadside, 8.5" x 12.5", Monterey, November 21, 1844. In part: "Soldiers: the voice of the country called you to Texas to crown your brow with the unfading laurels of victory; start now your march on the road to honor when in Guadalajara is heard the atrocious call of a revolution whose object is to destroy the work of political regeneration with which the Army cooperated so much with its illustrious chief. Soldiers: Would you consent to the violation of the constitution which a short time ago you swore to uphold and defend?..." A passionate plea to the armed forces, signed in type at closing, "Jose Maria de Ortega". The loss of Texas was often used in rhetoric as it could always be relied upon to rally the troops and unite adversaries. Not listed in Streeter.
Condition: Light dampstaining at bottom, well away from text, light foxing and a single pinhole at left margin; very good to near fine condition.
