J. W. Johnson's Old Reliable VA Minstrels Broadside.9.25" x 43"
Erie, Pennsylvania; circa 1920
Published by the Erie Litho. & Printing Company. An extra-long, double-sided broadside advertising the "World's Best Colored Show: The Show That Is Different". Decorated with elaborate engravings of various acts in the show. Printed on post-war pulp paper, which is very thin.
The original Virginia Minstrels were the first blackface troupe to perform in New York. They formed in 1843, and performed and toured with success through to the 20th century. It should be noted that the poster details that the group has been performing for 15 years, which suggests that this group adopted the name separately from the original VA Minstrels.
Condition: Flattened folds. Toned throughout, the paper is very fragile. Some chipping and paper loss. There are some strips of tape placed over tears. Worn and faded in places.
