Emory Douglas Poster Honoring Fred Hampton, You Can Jail a Revolutionary But You Can't Jail a Revolution...
    16.5" x 22"
    Chicago, Illinois; circa 1969-1970

Produced by the Black Panther Party. A poster featuring two photographs of Hampton and a long quotation that reads, "You can jail a revolutionary but you can't jail the revolution. You can run a freedom fighter around the country, but you can't run freedom fighting around the country. You can murder a liberator but you can't murder liberation." At the lower corner it reads, "Fred Hampton Deputy Chairman Illinois Chapter. Black Panther Party. Born August 30, 1948 Murdered by Fascist Pigs Dec. 4, 1969".

Fred Hampton (1948-1969) was a Chicago native, and became involved with the NAACP following his high school graduation in 1966. Hampton's oratorical skills and natural charisma helped him gain prominence within the Black Panthers and he soon became leader of the Chicago chapter. At the same time, the FBI's COINTELPRO program was conducting surveillance and raids on political groups such as those connected to the civil rights movement. In the early hours of December 4, approximately two dozen Chicago police officers raided Hampton's apartment. It is estimated that the police fired some 99 rounds, while the Panthers fired only a single shot. At the end of the raid, Fred Hampton, 21, and Mark Clark, 22, had been killed.

Condition: Toning and light foxing around the edges. There are pinholes at the corners and two tape residue stains at the bottom corners.
