    Civil War Recruiting Broadside for the Chautauqua Battalion, 72nd New York Infantry, Under Colonel Nelson Taylor. Large sheet, 15.75" x 22.25" (sight). Union Print, Dunkirk, Circa 1861. At top: "Good Men to the Rescue!" and announcing authorization to raise six companies of men to be attached to Colonel N. Taylor's Regiment. It reads: "An opportunity is now offered all good men who desire to defend the good old Flag of our Country, and preserve and vindicate the Constitution... The Regiment is now at the seat of war in face of the enemy... PAY FROM $13 TO $24 PER MONTH!" Signed in type by "James M Brown, Capt. 3d Reg't, Excelsior Brigade, Recruiting Officer."

    The regiment has a great battle record, including action at Gettysburg. Lieutenant L. Marcus who is named, was wounded in action at the Battle of Williamsburg in May 1862. James Brown was killed in action at Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862. Known for their fighting prowess, the 72nd was given and advanced position to occupy at Gettysburg on Emmitsburg road. They lost 114 men in the Battle.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with bold ink and toning. A few areas of light creasing. Matted to an overall size of 20.75" x 27.25".
