Description

Carrier's Address Broadside: "New Year's Gift, Addressed to the Patrons of the New Hampshire Patriot." One page, 13.5" x 20". January 1, 1811. Carrier's Addresses were given by newspapers to their subscribers on New Year's Day and featured allegorical poems referencing the news and events of the previous year. This particular broadside references Napoleon's activity in Europe: "His swift subjugation of every nation, From Poland's cold region's to Spain's southern strand"; Shay's Rebellion, President Madison "Commodore Mad'son, whose compass is right"; the defeat of Massachusetts Governor Christopher Gore by Elbridge Gerry; disintegration of the Tory political faction and the constant support of American freedom:

"Our wise Constitution and late Revolution,
We always will cherish, and 'scorn to be slaves;'
Our land-men and sea-men will try to live freemen,
As long as old Ocean shall swell with its waves."

Some text distortion due to foxing. Dark toning and wear around edges.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
