    Carl Lives! Poster.
    Linen-backed poster
    17.5" x 23"
    Houston, Texas; circa 1970

A large black and white image of Carl Hampton with a bold text above the photograph reading, "CARL LIVES!" Below the image are Hampton's birthdate and assassination date as well as the words, "You can kill a revolutionary, but you can't kill the revolution."

Carl Hampton organized the People's Party II and formed the Rainbow Coalition in 1969. In July 1970, Hampton got into an altercation with Houston police when they attempted to stop a young man from selling Black Panther newspapers. This resulted in a standoff between the People's Party II members and the Houston police that lasted ten days. On July 26, 1970, the People's Party II were holding a fundraiser at its headquarters to raise bail for two of its members who had been arrested. When Hampton left at approximately 10:30 pm, he was shot and killed by two officers staked out on a nearby rooftop. There are conflicting reports as to whether Hampton was assassinated or whether the officers returned fire after being fired upon. After his death, Hampton became a civil rights martyr, and the People's Party II became the official Houston Chapter of the Black Panther Party.

Condition: There is toning at the edges and flattened folds. Some areas of staining are present on the linen backing on verso.
