Description

Agustin de Iturbide Printed Decree. Two and one-quarter pages of a bifolium, 8.25" x 11.75", [n.p.], January 25, 1822. Just four months before becoming emperor of Mexico, Iturbide approved this decree recognizing the decrees of several cities regarding the necessity of increasing the number of constitutional alcaldes. Additionally, this decree contains the printed signatures of Manuel de la Barcena, Jose Isidro Yanez, Manuel Velazquez de Leon, and Antonio, Obispo de la Puebla, all of whom were members of the Regency of the Empire.

Instrumental in Mexico's independence from Spain, Iturbide (1783-1824) served as the new nation's emperor (as Agustin I) from May 1822 until March 1823. Iturbide's rule quickly fell to a revolt led by Santa Anna in 1823, but not before approving the first Anglo-Americans - led by Stephen F. Austin - to settle in Texas. Iturbide decrees are scarce.

Condition: This document bears light dampstaining in the upper right corner. Minor foxing. Paper loss at the lower right corner.
