    Description

    African Americana: Slave Broadside. 11.5" x 16" [sight] broadside, New Orleans, December 8, 1835, titled "Public Sale By the Register of Wills." It announces a public auction to sell the property of the late James Madison Zacharie, including four buildings and fourteen slaves "All of good character, and having been selected by the deceased for his own use, with the exception of John, who has run away several times." The slaves are listed by name, age and occupation (bricklayer and laborer). Some loss at folds (backed with plain paper), ink stains, bleed-through and browning at the fold lines. An early example. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17" x 21.5".
