1968 Poster of Guerilla: The Free Newspaper of the Streets.
    16.5" x 21.25"
    New York City; 1968

Newspaper is issue Volume 2, No.1. With a large, bold headline reading "POETRY IS REVOLUTION", and centered text that reads, "BROTHERS! LeRoi Jones, Huey Newton, Rap Brown & many others have been framed & face prison or death for the free act of self defense against police terror - Brothers! The judges represent a crumbling structure. Arise! Free Yourselves! Arm Yourselves! Work to Liberate the Creative Spirit in All Men". Writing by A.V. with poetry by LeRoi Jones and Regis Debray.

Guerilla was founded in Detroit by Allen Van Newkirk in 1967. The newspaper utilized an oversized format that was similar to that of a broadside, and published a mixture of radical poetry, humor, and political rhetoric. In January 1968, LeRoi Jones was sentenced to three years in prison for allegedly carrying a weapon and resisting arrest in the Newark riots. Huey Newton had also been arrested for his involvement in the shooting and subsequent death of Oakland police officer John Frey. At the bottom of this edition of Guerilla you can see two Defense Fund stamps for both LeRoi Jones and Huey Newton.

Condition: There is masking tape along both vertical edges of the newspaper, along with pinholes at each corner. A few soiling spots on the front as well as on verso.
