    Description

    1818 Runaway Slave Broadside.
    One sheet, 13.5" x 16.25"
    Virginia; March 21, 1818

Oversized broadside on laid paper offering a reward of $30 dollars for the return of "A Negro Boy Named Henderson" to the subscriber "Living in the County of Greenbriar". Signed in type, "Robert Stephen", by the subscriber and describing the runaway thus: "About twenty-one years of age, well made, five feet six or seven inches high, fluent in conversation, with no perceptible beard... He has a free pass, and is called in that Robert or Bob Robinson; the said pass authorising him to pass through the United States, signed by William Vauters and witnessed by Samuel Clark..." A free pass would have given Henderson access to travel undisturbed, and would have given him a clear advantage in his escape.

Condition: Broadside has been restored and backed with tissue, replacing paper in some areas. Light dampstaining and soiling do not detract from the overall bold presentation.
