Description[Texas Rangers]. Confederate States Broadside: General Orders for the 23d Brigade, Texas State Troops. One page, 9.5" x 11.75" (sight), Brenham [Texas], June 1862. With the secession of Texas from the United States in February 1861 and the forced withdrawal of all Federal military from the state, the new Confederate government was tasked with not only providing men for the forming Confederate Army, but protecting the frontier settlements from continuing Comanche and Kiowa raids. By December 21, 1861, the Frontier Regiment was born.
Organized along military lines to perform all manner of ranging duties, the regiment answered not to the Confederate military authorities, but to the government of Texas. This group of four general orders [noted at the lower edge as a "Texas Ranger, Print"] brings into existence the 23rd Brigade, Texas State Troops, under the command of Brigadier General John Sayles. The order specifies that "Every able bodied, free white male, inhabitant of the State, between the ages of 18 and 50 years, not specially exempted by law, is subject to military duty." Further, former duty in the Confederate Army "will not exempt a person from duty in the State Troops." All companies will "assemble for drill, at least once in every two weeks, and must diligently instruct, drill and exercise . . . in the school of the soldier and company, for at least four hours each day" and officers must assemble "for drill at least once in every two weeks, on a different day from that assigned for company drill."
The Frontier Regiment remained in existence until March 1, 1864, when it was officially mustered into the Confederate Army. In its place, Texas established the Frontier Organization which remained a presence on the frontier until the end of the war.
Smoothed folds show some areas of weakening with separation at the edges and minor loss of paper. Slight tearing and chipping in places at the edges. Small waterstain at the lower right corner. Matted to an overall size of 15" x 17.5".
