Description

[Robert E. Lee]. Confederate Broadside Announcing a Skirmish Near Leesburg. One printed page, 3.75" x 8.25", Richmond, August 16, [1861]. Published in the "Avalanche Extra" with the taglines "Another Grand Victory for the Confederates!" and "Heavy Loss of the Federals," the announcement concerns a skirmish near the town of Leesburg, early in the war and reads, in full: "Important news from the West has been hourly looked for since the departure of Gen. Lee to assume command of the forces opposing Rosencranz [General William Rosecrans]. Last night and this morning the city was full of rumors that a battle had taken place. Reliable intelligence reached here to day that a battle occurred at Leesburg, in which 300 of the enemy were killed, and the remaining [obscured by a small hole] taken prisoner. Loss on our side insignificant - sic killed and nine wounded. All the arms, ammunition, and baggage of the enemy were captured." Overall wrinkling with chipping at the edges. Text is faded in parts with a small hole near the lower edge causing some loss of paper and text. Lightly soiled.
