[John Hancock] Revolutionary War Broadside. One page, 8.5" x 13.5", Massachusetts, October 8, 1779, with heading, "State of Massachusetts-Bay. In the House of Representatives" and resolving "That the Selectmen or Committee of each town and plantation in this State, be, and they hereby are required to render under oath, a full account of all supplies furnished before the 15th of October instant . . . and also of all bounties and gratuities given . . . to every soldier and family of a soldier, raised as part of this State's proportion of the Continental army for three years or during the war; the account of supplies to be in form agreeable to a schedule directed by this Court . . . and the time of delivering every article of supply as well as of every sum of money is to be carefully noted. . . ." The broadside is signed in print by Speaker John Hancock and Secretary John Avery. Obtaining the necessary supplies and personnel to support the Continental Army was a source of constant concern for Congress and General George Washington. The year 1779 was especially difficult for the Americans and the pressures of that year took their toll on morale, thus making this 1779 resolve more necessary. Chipped along the right and lower edges. In the upper margin on the verso is handwritten in heavy ink, "Selectmen / Topsfield," which has bled-through and is visible from the front.
