[Eleazar Huntington]. Declaration of Independence Engraved Broadside as a Scroll. One sheet, 18.5" x 22", circa 1822, attached along the upper edge to a black wooden mount and along the lower edge to a black wooden scroll rod. "Engraved by E. Huntington" appears in small print along the lower margin of the document. The document has been varnished on the recto; the verso has been backed with linen. A large dampstain covers much of the document. A five-inch vertical separation exists in the center of the document. Both left and right edges exhibit several tiny holes created when green ribbon was sewn along the edges as adornment. Remnants of the green ribbon still exist. Some staining and buckling to the paper. One side of the hanging string is still attached along the upper mounting trim.

Eleazar Huntington of Connecticut was a master calligrapher and engraver who intentionally retained the feel of the original Declaration while incorporating new styles of presentation. Thus, the famous signatures are faithfully reproduced without embellishment. Huntington's early engravings of the Declaration were often hung in nineteenth-century schoolhouses on a wooden rod and wooden mount, which frequently resulted in condition flaws. Most of Huntington's Declarations sold today have been removed from their original scroll rod and mount. This one retains both.
