First Separate Printing of "The Night Before Christmas"[Clement C. Moore]. Prof. C. C. Moore. Christmas Carol. The Visit of St. Nicholas. Philadelphia: John M. Wolff, .
Broadside (16.125 x 9.75 inches; 410 x 248 mm), with text printed in blue and a red border of ivy entwined about stylized interlocking branches within a blue double-ruled border; sides and top margin a bit chipped. A couple of short closed tears (measuring approximately one-half inch) at left and right margins, extending just past the blue borders, not affecting text or decorations. Paper toning a bit at edges. Red morocco portfolio lined in green moiré, front cover lettered gilt. A rare and wonderful item, in near fine condition.
The first separate printing of "The Night Before Christmas" crediting Moore as the author. The only known previous separate printing is cited as one by Myron King, a broadside printed in Troy, New York, about 1830, but this was not located by BAL, citing only a catalog entry (thus possibly a ghost). Wolff's broadside was issued as a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" greeting.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
