    Description

[Civil War]. Soldiers' Protection Ring Broadside with Ring. One page, 6.25" x 9.25", published by Judkins & Patten, Agents; undated. As a precursor to dog tags, this commercial broadside advertised the sale of identification rings for soldiers, in part:

"The object of this Ring is as follows: -
1st. - In the report of every Battle there are always a great many reported missing, the largest proportion of which are killed and buried by parties who do not know them.
2d. - Many are also carried to Hospitals, sick or wounded, who are unable to make known their name and Regiment who would be easily recognized by the Army Protection Ring upon their finger, and their friends thereby relieved from the suspense of uncertainty in regard to their fate.
...and in after years would prove a rich legacy to your children as a proof of your Patriotism to your Country in time of danger...Price - Silver Rings 50 cts. - Gold $3,00."

Accompanying the broadside is a wooden ring, which has "160th NY / 1863" engraved into the sides along with two shield decorations. As the war dragged on, many soldiers feared becoming unidentifiable if they were wounded or killed. As a result, companies began to manufacture these rings or metal pins that would carry the name, branch of service, and/or company of each soldier.

Condition: Broadside is unevenly toned, with flattened folds. Ring is in very good condition.
