[Benjamin Butler]: Occupation of New Orleans Broadside. 7.5" x 24" broadside, titled "Proclamation/ Headquarters Department of the Gulf/ New Orleans, May 1st, 1862." Benjamin Butler, in his capacity as "Major-General commanding the forces of the United States in the Department of the Gulf" decided to set some ground rules for the local inhabitants. Butler asked the owner of the "True Delta" newspaper office to print the proclamation, but he refused. As a consequence, the press was promptly seized and military personnel employed to do the printing. Some of the rules dictate the surrender of arms, a ban on flags other than that of the United States and a suspension on the right to peaceably assemble. As a result of these laws, William Mumford was executed for lowering the flag that Farragut had raised over the U. S. Mint prior to Butler's entering the city. These harsh measures led to Butler's moniker as "The Beast". A later revision of this proclamation threatening to treat unaccompanied Southern women as ladies of the evening caused an uproar, prompting a summary execution order for Butler by Confederate forces should he ever be captured. Minor losses at top corners not affecting text, light folds, else very good condition. Not examined out of frame.
