"Address of A. J. Hamilton" Broadside. One sheet, 15.75" x 18", Austin, March 18, 1869. This printed broadside is addressed "To the People of Texas" and begins, "Impressed with the belief that it was the wish of a large portion of the citizens and voters of Texas, I have presented my name as a candidate at the approaching election for Governor of the State under the new Constitution." It ends, "Whatever the result may be-whether in public or private life-I shall not cease to labor for the restoration of peace in society, free civil government, and the solid prosperity and happiness of the people." Throughout, Hamilton, who was associated with the Radical Republicans, states his various positions, such as favoring black suffrage. Three advertisements occur in the lower right corner following the text. The date is printed on the final line of the last column. Toned with smoothed folds. Very minor chipping to edges.

Andrew Jackson Hamilton had opposed the secession of Texas. After the Civil War began, he was forced to flee the state for Mexico. Later during the war, President Lincoln appointed him a brigadier general. In the earliest years of Reconstruction, Hamilton aligned with Radical Republicans and helped produce the Texas Constitution of 1869. He narrowly lost his gubernatorial bid to fellow Republican Edmund Davis.
