Broadside: Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga. One page, 12.25" x 17", June 22, 1836, Guadalajara, in Spanish. In the patriotic document headed, Manifesto del Comandante General del Departmento de Jalisco รก sus Habitantes, Paredes eloquently makes the case for the reconquest of Texas. He asks Mexicans how they will respond to the theft of their territory by the strangers in Tejas? A very interesting document. One repair to the top right corner and archival tape reinforcing at two folds on the verso, else fine.

Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga was one of the great manipulators of Mexican politics during the early nineteenth century. He served as a Royalist officer during the War for Independence and sided with the Centralists after the foundation of the Mexican state. He was actively involved in politics holding the rank of brigadier general and briefly serving as secretary of war. Paredes assumed the Mexican presidency in 1845. He hoped to wage a limited war with the United States to increase Mexico's status and receive indemnification for the loss of Texas. His gamble failed, as United States forces defeated the Mexican army in 1846. By August of that year, Paredes was overthrown in a military coup led by his former ally Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.
