    Broadside: Luis Gonzaga Vieyra Document Signed, a decree dividing Mexico into twenty-four departments. One page, 8.75" x 13.25", Mexico City, July 7, 1838. Signed at the end in ink by Governor Luis Gonzaga Vieyra, and by Luis G. de Chávarri, Secretary. With this decree, the Governor announces that Congress hereby "divides the territory of the republic into twenty-four departments that are denominated as Aguascalientes, California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Mexico , Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, New Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Texas, Veracruz, Yucatan and Zacatecas, whose extension and capitals will be those that each currently has, and in Coahuila [the capital will be] the city of Saltillo." Document is lightly age toned. A few creases and small tears at edges; lower right corner is missing but this does not affect type or signatures. Fine condition.
