Marking the southwestern boundary of the Louisiana Purchase

Broadside Announcing Decree Regarding the Marking of the Southwestern Boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase. Elephant folio made of two sheets (top/bottom), 16.75" x 23.25"; Mexico, issued on July 2, 1836. At top: "EL C. JOSE GOMEZ DE LA CORTINA". Printed in four columns, in Spanish and English. This decree, which relates to the long disputed, and much delayed, southwestern boundary of the Louisiana Purchase, sets the time and place and appoints commissioners for running and marking the boundary from the mouth of the Sabine River to the Pacific Ocean in northern California. The treaty became effective on the same day as the Battle of San Jacinto, making the whole matter of the boundary meaningless as far as Texas was concerned.

Offered here is the broadside printing of Streeter 1257A, issued on July 2, 1836. The four page printing Streeter describes in his entry was issued on June 18, 1836.

Reference: Streeter 1257A (Streeter locates only two copies). Eberstadt 162:853.

Condition Issues: Adhesive staining across center, where sheets are joined. Staining and paper loss affections seven lines of a single column of text. Few small tears at margins. Tiny hole at center where folds intersect. Pencil annotations in pencil by a previous collector.
