Patrick Churchill Jack's Brazoria County Head Right certificate

Brazoria County First Class Head Right Certificate. Partly printed form, one page, 8" x 9.6". Brazoria County, January 25, 1838. At top: "No. 1". Issued to Patrick C. Jack, who "has appeared before the Board of Land Commissioners for the County of Brazoria and proved according to law, that he arrived in the Country in the year of 1833 and that he is a single man and entitled to the augmentation of 369 acres of land upon condition of paying at the rate of three dollars and fifty cents for each labor of Temporal land and one dollar and twenty cents for each labor of Pasture land..." Signed by three commissioners and a clerk. First Class Head Right grants were issued to every "free white person" who arrived in Texas before independence, March 2, 1836. Heads of families received one league (4,428 acres) and one labor (177.1 acres), while single men received 1/3 league (1,476.1 acres). Jack had likely already received his allotment of land, and this certificate is for additional land.

Patrick Churchill Jack moved to Texas in 1830. He received a quarter of a league of land in Stephen Austin's colony in present day Grimes, and move to Brazoria in 1833 per this certificate. Jack, along with his law partner William B. Travis, was arrested in 1832 by Mexican authorities after being caught in a lie made in an attempt to capture runaway slaves. The incident would give rise to the Anahuac Disturbances.

Condition: Flattened folds, and a tiny bit of paper loss occurring in the top area. Bold ink, which has blossomed in a few areas. Simple filing docket on verso. Very clean and near fine.
