Boston Port Bill of 1774 Printing. Nine pages of first edition text printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, "Printers to the King's most Excellent Majesty," 1774. The title page begins, "Anno Regni GeorgII III. Regis Magnae Britanniae, Franciae, & Hiberniae, Decimo Quarto. To the Parliament. . . ." Bound later in a single volume (7.75" x 12"). The spine is lettered in gilt and fragile, though still intact. Pages are age-toned with only minimal staining.

Following the Boston Tea Party, the British Parliament passed a number of measures (known in America as the Intolerable Acts) to punish the rebellious American colonies, including this port bill in Boston, which passed on March 31, 1774, and prohibited ships from being loaded or unloaded in Boston Harbor until the tea that was destroyed during the Tea Party was repaid. (There were some exemptions to this port bill.) When the British Navy and Army enforced the bill, other American colonies joined Massachusetts in condemning the bill, leading toward unification of the colonies. The act begins: "An Act to discontinue, in such Manner, and for such Time as are therein mentioned, the landing and discharging, lading or shipping, of Goods, Wares, and Merchandise, at the Town, and within the Harbour, of Boston, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, in North America."
