Description[Civil War Court Martial] General Orders No. 380. Eighteen pages, 4.75" x 7.25", Washington, November 24, 1863. Bound with a single string in book form and issued by the War Department, "By order of the Secretary of War," it is a recount of the "General Court Martial, which convened at Vicksburg, Mississippi, August 3, 1863." A number of soldiers were put on trial.
The first defendant, Private Benjamin C. Wilson, Co. D, 81st Illinois Volunteers, was found guilty of desertion and sentenced "to be shot to death, at such time and place as the General commanding the Department may designate.." This is a great read for collectors interested in military justice in the nineteenth century. Two binding holds in the left margin, but otherwise in very fine condition.
