BILLY EVANS LETTER TO MONTE PEARSON. This typed, full-page letter was Billy Evans’ response to pitcher Monte Pearson’s apparent plea in contract negotiations. At the time, February 3, 1935, Evans was retired from his Hall of Fame umpiring career, and comfortably holding the office of Cleveland Indian General Manager. In that capacity, and in this letter, Evans seems to support Pearson, but cautions him that "...Judge Landis does not look with favor on bonus contracts." This is a marvellous letter with all the ingredients -- Indians letterhead, hand-edited for typos, and the usual mailing folds. Neatly, one of the mailing creases interrupts the signature which, in itself, grades "10". As it turned out, the otherwise very capable Pearson had a miserable showing for Cleveland in ‘35, but went on to post impressive numbers with the Yankees in the Gehrig/DiMaggio era. Within months after this letter, Evans was thanklessly ordered to take a major salary cut, and he promptly resigned to take a new post with Yawkey’s Red Sox. LOA Spence and Grad/DNA. This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
