    Benjamin Lincoln: Impressive 1776 Document Signed by the General Who Received Cornwallis's Sword at Yorktown, Appointing a Former Minute Man as Captain. 1 page, 12.5" x 9.5", March 23, 1776, Watertown, Massachusetts. During the Siege of Boston, the Council of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay meets at nearby Watertown and appoints William Thurlow, who belonged to the Lexington Alarm, as an officer in the Militia. Partly printed document signed by sixteen members of the Council, including B. Lincoln, James Otis, B. Greenleaf, W. Spooner, Caleb Cushing, Joseph Gearish, John Whitcomb, Jedh. Foster, Chas. Chauncey, J. Palmer, Moses Gill, Jabez Fisher, S. Holten, Michael Farley, and B. White.
    Benjamin Lincoln was general of the Massachusetts Militia and went on to be a prominent player in the War, with the rank of Major General of the Continental Army. Later he would serve as Washington's Secretary of War and return to duty to help in the suppression of Shay's Rebellion.
    Overall condition of this document is very good, with considerable appeal for display. It has been backed with paper for stability. Embossed red was seal affixed at upper left. Minor small holes and slight tears with expected partial separations along fold lines are unobtrusive as backed.
