Benefiting Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
Lot 1: Vintage Maltese Cross Cuff by Verdura
    Value: $34,500.00

Coco Chanel brought us the little black dress, bell bottoms, Chanel No. 5 perfume and Fulco di Verdura, the designer of the iconic Maltese Cross.

In the late 1920s, Chanel and Fulco di Verdura set out on a European tour, hoping for fresh inspiration. They visited fine jewelry museum collections and exhibitions and emerged from the tour excited about the recurring Byzantine pattern they saw. Soon after, Fulco created his revolutionary and now legendary brooch motifs, combining precious and semi-precious gemstones in asymmetrical patterns with different colors of gold. Fulco was eventually inspired to mount the brooches on a pair of cuffs he crafted for Chanel, thus defining the signature look for which she is most notably remembered, and launching the creation of Verdura's signature motif - the Maltese Cross.

Carved onyx cuff with an 18K yellow gold cross mount with one oval cabochon emerald (8x6mm), four pear-shaped cabochon sapphires (9x6mm), four pearls (5mm) and 12 round diamonds weighing approximately 1.80 carats. VB846

Verdura is a fine jewelry company focusing on retail, with a limited wholesale segment. The core business focus is design-intensive pieces produced directly from the archives.
Verdura was established in 1939 by Fulco di Verdura, a Sicilian duke who began his career as Coco Chanel's head jewelry designer. After eight years with Chanel, and most notably, designing the Maltese Cross brooches and cuffs, Verdura embarked to America in 1934. With a Hollywood connection through his close friend Cole Porter, Verdura designed colorful jewels for stars of the era, including Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth and Katharine Hepburn. Eventually, Verdura settled in New York on Fifth Avenue (Cole Porter and Vincent Astor were his financial backers) and immediately gained a following with fashion's best-dressed list (Babe Paley was his muse and one of his best clients). Verdura, appointed "America's Crown Jeweler" by The New York Times, was one of the premier jewelry designers of the 20th century. In 1985, Ward Landrigan purchased Verdura and continued the tradition of creating timeless designs from the nearly 10,000 sketches Fulco made in his lifetime. In 2003, his son, Nico, joined him in the family business and currently serves as president alongside his father, who is the chairman and CEO. Today, Verdura continues to appear on the pages of the top fashion books and shares the red carpet of celebrity fans, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields, Anne Hathaway and Cameron Diaz.
One of the leading internationally renowned fine jewelers, Verdura is known for its innovative designs, expertise, craftsmanship and quality gemstone pieces. With the exclusive salon flagship headquarters located in New York, Verdura intends to maintain its strategic position as one of the leading luxury retailers while expanding its wholesale network both in the U.S. and internationally. Currently there is one salon and eight exclusive distribution points of sale for the fine jewelry collection. With its established reputation as an industry leader, Verdura annually introduces new product offerings from the archive and services an international clientele.
