Bell Street Baptist Church Bombing Debris. Measuring approximately 6.25" x 2.25", this scrap of green debris is marked "Bell St. a piece of debris 1/11/57" in the hand of Leonard Ballou, husband of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s personal secretary, Maude Ballou.

Just three weeks after the United States Supreme Court ruled that the segregation of Montgomery's bus system was unconstitutional, four area churches were bombed: Hutchinson Street Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Mount Olive Baptist Church, and Bell Street Baptist Church. According to newspaper sources, the Montgomery Police Department described the home-made bombs as several sticks of dynamite taped around a metal tube. Several local Klan members, Raymond C. Britt Jr., Henry Alexander, and James D. York, were charged with the crimes, but the charges were dropped by Eugene Loe, the city prosecutor. Eleven days later, all three men and one other were involved in the murder of Willie Edwards Jr.

Bell Street, which had sustained the most damage, was rebuilt and held its first service in the newly renovated building eighteen months later. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
